Big BIll-14 Ways to Quit ICE
by Kay Bien
14 fun ideas for quitting your job with the proud boy secret police
My Big Bill journey started with another song about employment, the infectiously craven sounding “Two-Weeks” off 2015’s Second Bill. After listening to that song on repeat for a fortnight I bounced around the catalog. I really like Big Bill, who for me, sound like if The Dead Milkmen were from Texas. From Texas but with modern politics so you can still listen to them and not feel bad about it.
Which brings us to 14 ways, one of two songs on the Songs for the Internet EP. This was the first song I wanted to post on RH but I didn’t have the guts to do it. I don’t know what I was scared about exactly, except, there is probably good reason to be scared. Is it even still protected speech to perform or even platform this type of satire?
This EP features two outstanding tracks about ICE. It’s hard to call these typical Big Bill songs as they sound more like indi-dance-punk PSA’s, but they do that incredibly well. They are much older than the tragedies and occupation of Minneapolis, but I find the cutting satire therapeutic.
In the last ten years we have seen an influx of european slightly-less-toxic self-aware masculinity in punk rock. I love that stuff but It’s nice to discover some Texans who have a homespun sound all their own. This is demonstrated pretty well on the brand newish Big Bill album out Sick Myth and it’s 4th single "Young Men of The World". I encourage you to go digging through the catalog, this band has tons of gems.
And if you are wondering about that name.........there is a comic for that.
