Replacement Hipster was an mp3 music blog started by a bunch of nerds in the mid '00s. In a lot of ways it was the center of my universe. After 15 years it succumbed to some combination of PHP death rot and a malicious script injection.
RH was never a serious endeavor. There was no advertising. MP3’s were uploaded to the public server directly. Everyone I met between 2006 and 2015 had an account. At its height we had about 12 people actively posting.
We used the stock red template on a loudblog installation. We made dozens of our own art banners and had them load randomly. It was all taped together but worked surprisingly well.
At it’s core, it was a way to share music with friends. The music landscape is weirder than it was twenty years ago. There is more music, and it’s easier to listen to it, but harder to get paid. Discovering music is still the magic trick. This version of RH will focus on sending people to BandCamp or an Artist’s YouTube. The pages are static this time and posts will be screened and added manually via email. It is what it is, but it’s ours.
